California’s Diablo Canyon Nuclear Plant Granted Extension to Operate Until 2030 Amid Ongoing Safety Concerns

California’s Diablo Canyon nuclear plant can continue operating at least until 2030, according to state energy regulators. The Public Utilities Commission (PUC) voted to extend the facility’s closure date from 2025 to 2030. The next step is the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to consider extending the plant’s operating licenses. The cost of maintaining the plant could reach $6 billion. The vote comes after years of debate about the plant’s continued operations due to safety concerns due to its location in an earthquake zone.
