California has been investing over $250 million into creating a network of hydrogen fueling stations, but this has not been successful due to limited availability and rising fuel prices. In 2021, only 3,143 hydrogen cars sold in California compared to 380,000 battery-electric vehicles. Fuel cell cars are now being marketed with heavy discounts and Honda has revealed a hydrogen hybrid version of its best-selling CR-V. However, the state’s hydrogen fueling station performance has been inconsistent, with many often offline due to shortages or equipment issues. Filling up a hydrogen vehicle now costs Californian drivers approximately $200. Despite these challenges, there are still some who believe in the future of hydrogen technology.
