A California tribe has reached a compromise with offshore wind developers to create a smaller version of the Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary in the Pacific Ocean. If adopted by NOAA, the agreement would initially allow offshore wind projects to connect to the onshore grid. This could resolve a conflict between the Biden administration’s offshore wind ambitions and his commitment to tribes. The Northern Chumashing Tribal Council, which first proposed the sanctuary, urged the government to prioritise conservation efforts and take concrete steps to secure the sanctuary.
