California Sues Major Oil Companies for Misleading Public on Fossil Fuel Dangers Amid Climate Change Accountability Movement.

California is suing the world’s largest oil companies and their subsidiaries, along with the industry trade association the American Petroleum Institute, for misleading the public about the dangers of burning fossil fuels. The lawsuit is the latest in a growing number of local governments looking to hold fossil fuel companies financially accountable for the effects of climate change. The Center for Climate Integrity has hailed the lawsuit as a “watershed moment” in the movement to take on the industry, and the environmental group Fossil Free Media has called for the oil industry to face evidence of its deception in court. California’s lawsuit notes that the state has done the most damage done by the fossil fuel industry in the 20th year of this summer.
