California Signs $80 Million Deal for First Hydrogen-Powered Intercity Trains in North America with Stadler Rail.

California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has signed a $80 million deal with Stadler Rail to introduce the first hydrogen-powered intercity passenger trains in North America. The state-of-the-art hydrogen trains will be based on Stadlers’s innovative Fast Light Intercity and Regional Train (FLIRT) concept, which allows them to operate using zero-emission hydrogen fuel cells without needing a separate locomotive. This partnership builds upon the successful collaboration between StadLER Rail and the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority. The $80m contract includes an initial order for four trainsets, with provisions for up to 25 additional trainsets across California. The announcement follows significant investments in zero- emission transportation in California.
