Education and health bodies in California have warned against proposed changes to the state’s net energy metering tariff (VNEM) which would allow multiple properties with multiple electricity meters to consume their energy on-site without selling it all to the utility and buying it back at higher rates. This would remove the ability for these properties to reduce their utility burden through rooftop solar. Assemblymember Damon Connolly has joined calls for the California Public Utility Commission (PUC) to include on-Site netting to allow these facilities access to solar-generated power. The change is intended to incentivise battery storage systems to increase grid resilience and reward consumers for using stored energy at peak times.
