The Environmental Integrity Project has warned that biofuels plants are often large sources of hazardous air pollution due to their rapid growth and subject to lax permitting requirements. The group argues that these environmental benefits are questionable at best. The number of ethanol plants nearly quadrupled in the first decade of this century and now stands at around 190. At least another 32 biofuel projects are in the works, potentially expanding capacity by one-third over the previous year’s levels.
