The Biden administration is challenging a federal judge’s order overturning a temporary freeze on new approvals for liquefied natural gas exports. The Department of Energy is asking the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to allow for a pause on new authorizations while it studies climate risks of the fuel. The decision was made after the agency faced pressure from conservation groups to consider how LNG project emissions could worsen global temperatures. The LNG pause did not affect prior LNG export approvals, but instead put a hold on pending and future applications to countries without a free trade agreement with the US.
