The Obama administration has announced $3 billion in federal funding to help all 50 states remove lead pipes from their drinking water systems. The funds come from the 2021 infrastructure law and will be distributed through EPA’s Drinking Water State Revolving Fund, which provides grants and low-interest loans to states to make drinking water cleaner and safer. The largest portion of the funds will go to Illinois, which is receiving $240.9 million, followed by Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey. Despite controversy over the allocations, some states and environmental advocates have argued that the administration allocated too much money last year to certain states and not enough to others. The funding announcement will be made at an event in Wilmington, North Carolina, where President Joe Biden will tout the funding.
