The audit cited new funding from the 2021 infrastructure law and 2022 Inflation Reduction Act as the primary threat to the department from data mismanagement. The report also noted a lack of common standards for handling information on grants and rebates, which could cause important details to go unreported or lost in a sea of databases. It warned that this could result in unidentified fraud, waste, and abuse of the Department’s resources.
