AtkinsRéalis, a global professional services and project management company in Montreal, Quebec, has been chosen to develop the pre-concept design for a nuclear fusion pilot plant (FPP), announced as part of Type One Energy’s FusionDirect program. The pilot will be a commercial-scale FPP using stellarator technology to demonstrate its potential to generate power from fusion energy. The company’s president, Joe St. Julian, believes fusion energy has the potential to provide a limitless source of power to advance the global energy transition. The project is part of a larger effort by several companies investing in fusion-related projects as issues of climate change and energy security rise. AtkinsRéali’ UK-based fusion team will provide multi-disciplinary engineering services to develop plant requirements, facility designs, and a preliminary site layout.
