Ampt Energy and Enphase Energy, based in the US, have developed new products that convert electricity in direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC) as is produced by solar panels. These conversions have led to different conceptions of solar manufacturing in general, and the way that the solar sector can change to meet the world’s clean energy goals. Enphase’s work in string inverters has culminated in the IQ8 series of inverters, a range of products that can be used in large-scale grid systems, or smaller, off-grid environments. Ampt recently delivered 195MW of string inverter to a new utility-scale project in South Carolina, and its focus on minimising costs on large scales is evident in the nature of its DC-coupled systems, which can dramatically improve the overall efficiency of a power system. Both companies aim to create a decentralised energy management system, where inverters are connected to individual modules.
