A patent by Air Products and Chemicals has been filed to introduce a new process and apparatus for cracking ammonia, aiming to improve hydrogen production efficiency. The process involves heating ammonia gas at super-atmospheric pressure to produce a partially cracked ammonia gas, which is then fed into catalyst-containing reactor tubes in a furnace, resulting in further cracking and the production of a gas mixture of hydrogen, nitrogen, and residual ammonia. The patent’s innovative heat integration method significantly reduces energy consumption and ensures a more efficient and sustainable hydrogen production process. The technology has significant potential applications, particularly in the hydrogen production sector, as well as industries dependent on hydrogen.
