AES Corp Launches 60-MW Solar Park in Maui, Promising Low-Cost Renewable Energy for 27,000 Homes.

US electric utility AES Corp (NYSE:AES) has launched commercial operations at a 60-MW solar park with an integrated battery energy storage system on the Hawaiian island of Maui. The milestone was announced by Hawaiian Electric, which will buy the plant’s output under a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) that became effective on May 31, 2024. The Kuihelani complex is expected to generate electricity to meet the demand of about 27,000 homes annually and feed power to the grid at USD 0.08 per kWh, the lowest renewable energy price in the state. The site will cover 15% of Hawaii’s energy needs and construction began in 2022.
