24M Technologies in Cambridge, Mass., has developed a direct material recycling method called Liforever, which allows recycling of all active materials from the anode and cathode. This method keeps the active materials in their original form and does not create a black mass, unlike other methods used for lithium-ion cells that use toxic pyrometallurgical and hydrometalurgical recycling processes. The LiforeVer method is designed to be compatible with recycling regulations and can support next-generation batteries of all chemistries. The company has acquired license agreements with Volkswagen Group, Fujifilm Corporation, Kyrocera Corporation, Lucas TVS, Axxiva and FREYR. In 2022, 24M received a grant from the Department of Energy’s ARPA-E program to develop and scale a high-energy-density battery for use in electric aviation.
